Currently reading – ‘Blankets’ by Craig Thompson
Written and illustrated by Craig Thompson
This is a massive original graphic novel. It’s 600 pages and is heavy enough that it feels like a stone tablet. It’s intimidating to pick up because of how dense it looks. This is one of the thickest graphic novel’s I’ve ever read but flows incredibly fast since many of the pages are splash pages by Thompson that are beautiful showcases for his art as well as telling the story without any dialogue. It’s also sectioned off into nine chapters that each represent a different time in Craig Thompson’s adolescence. This also helps to move the story along without making it feel like a chore pushing through so many pages.
‘Blankets’ is Craig Thompson’s personal story about growing up in an evangelical Christian household and struggling with his feelings about religion and how it influences everything else in his life from sexuality to his love for art. This is a coming-of-age story and follows Craig from childhood and into early adult life.’ Blankets’ is primarily about the blossoming relationship he has with a fellow church camp goer, Raina as well as his changing relationship with his brother Phil. The relationship that Craig details with Raina, is truly beautiful and will have an emotional impact on anyone that reads ‘Blankets’. I would highly recommend this to anyone whose familiar with and enjoys the works of Alison Bechdel and Adrian Tomine. It’s a very personal tale told in a stylized black and white art style that is somber and can be an emotion gut-punch at times. I’ve heard lots of critical praise for ‘Blankets’ and a lot of positive word-of-mouth, and even with all of that build up and potential to be let down it did not disappoint.

To read.
